Katherine Aversano, Girls High School and Middle School Coach:  Katherine joined the Fort Hunt Rugby program in 2014 as coach of both the girls' 15s and 7s teams.  She is an Assistant Coach for the Virginia HS Girls All-Stars Team, as well as Contributing Coach for the University of Mary Washington Women’s Rugby Club in Fredericksburg, VA.  She has also coached at local high school rugby clinics and academies in the DC, Maryland, and Virginia area.  Through rugby Katherine empowers young women to be strong and capable and teaches them to love themselves. She is a 2004 graduate of the University of Mary Washington with a double major in Philosophy and Classics.  She played all four years of her collegiate career as a forward.  During her tenure, Mary Washington placed 3rd in the Nation for DII Women’s Collegiate Rugby (2002, 2004), 1st in the VRU DII Women’s Collegiate Championship (2001, 2002, 2003, 2004), won the VRU Team Sportsmanship Award (2001), and the Referee Society of Virginia Sportsmanship Award (2001).  After college, Katherine attended the Howard University School of Law graduating with a focus on environmental law.  She currently works for the federal government in the environmental sector as a legal historian and information specialist. Katherine plays rugby when possible, playing in the annual alumni match at Mary Washington and occasionally with an Old Girls team. She is a USA Rugby Level 100 and Level 200 certified coach.  She is certified in CPR and First Aid and completed the CDC Concussion Awareness training. 


Andy Vonada, Girls High School Coach Emeritus: Andy founded the Fort Hunt Rugby program in 2006 and now serves as the FHYAA Rugby Commissioner and an emeritus coach for the high school girls program. He is a retired Marine Corps officer and has lived in the Fort Hunt community since 2002. Andy played for numerous military and civilian rugby clubs throughout his career and while stationed in Japan, South America, North Carolina and here in the metro-DC area (to include Quantico RFC and West Potomac RFC). He long has been active in youth sports and has coached his daughters’ youth soccer teams with LMVSA and Marine Corps Community Services programs overseas. From 2007 to 2010 he was the head coach for the TC Williams HS Girls Rugby Club. Andy holds USA Rugby Coaching certifications for both Level 1 and Level 2, and has refereed with the Potomac Rugby Referees Society.  He's an old boy rugby player for the Poltroons.


John Dacey, President and Coach: John is a Fort Hunt Rugby dad and has been one of the leaders of Fort Hunt Rugby since we began in 2006. He is a retired Army officer who in the Fort Hunt community has coached ten seasons of girls soccer in LMVSA, and has been a leader in Scouting since 2004. He’s been a member of the FHYAA Board since 2009. He has played rugby since 1981, starting at Washington University in St. Louis. He’s played for the Washington University Banshees, Fort Sill (OK) Gunners, Baumholder (Germany) Highlanders, Heidelberg Black Sheep, the President’s XV, Heidelberger Turnverein, Heidelberger Ruderklub, the US Forces Europe Select XV, the All-US Army team, Sierra Vista/Fort Huachuca (AZ) Desert Legion, Tacoma (WA) Nomads, Fort Lewis Stud Dawgs, Combined Old Boys Rugby Association (Malaysia), the Malaysian Ministry of Defence Old Boys, JICPAC Juggernauts (Hawaii), and currently is playing as an old boy with the Alexandria Roosters. He has refereed in Europe and the US as a C1 ref, is a past member of the British Army Rugby Union Referees Society and the Pacific Northwest Rugby Referees Society, and is currently a member of the Potomac Society of Rugby Football Referees.  He is a past chairman of the Rugby VA laws committee. He has been a rugby administrator since 1988, as President of the Baumholder Highlanders, President of the Sierra Vista Desert Legion, President of the US Forces Europe Rugby Union in 1988 and 1989, and as a director of the US Army rugby program from 1987 to 1991. He has coached the Baumholder Highlanders, Sierra Vista/Fort Huachuca Desert Legion, JICPAC Juggernauts, and the University of Arizona Women, and first received his USA Rugby certification for coaching in 2007. He is a life member of the US Rugby Football Foundation and the Positive Coaching Alliance.

Dale Roach, Boys High School Head Coach: Dale is a Fort Hunt Rugby dad and has been a coach with Fort Hunt Rugby since 2007. He has played rugby since 1981, starting with his college side and playing for various men’s clubs over the years. He played for Wake Forest University for five years and was the captain of the WFU team in his senior year. Dale is certified for coaching at USA Rugby Level 1. Dale is active in the Fort Hunt community through his coaching and mentoring efforts:

Scott DePhilllips, Boys High School Assistant Coach: Scott is a California transplant. He first started coaching with Fort Hunt Youth Rugby in 2010 with his daughter, and has returned in 2017 to help with the boys. He has played rugby since 1991, starting with San Francisco Golden Gate RFC playing 7s when home from school and between playing football. He started playing 15s in 1993 with San Francisco Golden Gate RFC He has also played with a number of different men’s rugby clubs in a tournament setting. He continues to play Rugby for The Alexandria Roosters Rugby Club. Scott is certified for coaching at USA Rugby Level 1.

David Hughes joined the Fort Hunt program in 2009, helping coach the U-9 and U-11 touch teams. From 2013 to 2015 he coached with Alexandria Rugby with the boys U-13 tackle side. He returned to Fort Hunt in 2016 to work with the boys high school and photograph club activity. He is a Level 200 USA Rugby-certified coach, and a Level 1 certified referee. His playing experience goes back to being the youngest player in the Bahamas Rugby Football Union in 1977, playing for Baillou RFC. In 1980 he played as member of the Bahamian National team against the Barbarians (UK).  He went on to play for the University of Virginia Rugby Football Club 1980-84. David left rugby for many years after injuring his knee in '84.  He came back to rugby when his son started playing for Fort Hunt in 2009 and began playing again himself with the Alexandria Roosters and became Team Manager and President in 2011 and 2014, respectively. Dave is a semi-professional photographer and has shot a number of international rugby matches as well as amateur ones. David is a graduate of the University of Virginia, with a a degree in Art History and History.
